  9. independent from Leon.

  14. protected the Moors, he was killed trying to
  15. check a Moorish rising.

  17. Alfonso X, called el Sabio (`the Wise')
  18. 1221-1284.
  19. King of Castile from 1252. His reign was
  20. politically unsuccessful but he contributed
  21. to learning: he made Castilian the official
  22. language of the country and commissioned a
  23. history of Spain and an encyclopedia, as well
  24. as several translations from Arabic
  25. concerning, among other subjects, astronomy
  26. and games.

  28. Alfonso XI, the Avenger 1311-1350.
  29. King of Castile from 1312. He ruled cruelly,
  30. repressed a rebellion by his nobles, and
  31. defeated the last Moorish invasion 1340.

  34. King of Spain from 1875, son of Isabella II.
  35. He assumed the throne after a period of
  36. republican government following his mother's
  37. flight and effective abdication 1868.

  39. Alfonso XIII
  40. King of Spain 1886-1931. He assumed power
  41. 1906 and married Princess Ena, granddaughter
  42. of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, in
  43. the same year. He abdicated 1931 soon after
  44. the fall of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship
  45. 1923-30 (which he supported), and Spain
  46. became a republic. His assassination was
  47. attempted several times.
